As a SME based in Suffolk UK thought i would begin by giving an overview of where the local construction industry is currently at. Speaking to contacts within the game we are all quoting at a higher level than last year but are both having to be more competitive on price and are waiting longer for decisions to be made.
This is frustrating for all as we see the 'green shoots of recovery' but there is no continuity to the flow of work so it is very much fits and starts. That siad there is still construction work out there it just takes a bit more to win it.
As for Drill Masters we are certainly surviving if not quiet thriving. Turnover is up by 15% on last year but we have had quiet spells as well. Being a SME we have low overheads with no debt or HP to drain our resources each month but in the same breath have no long term contracts that give regular income streams.
Gaining new business is difficult as there are only so many you can call clients to see if they have any work coming up. This makes it hard to fill in the gaps when the program goes slow.
My next blog will give more of an insight into the art of diamond drilling what it is? where its used? and some of the benefits compared to other techniques. Please add your own comments as i try to give a viewpoint of a small business in a specialist market surviving the recession and growing as the market returns.
